Aircond Not Cold? 7 Common Causes (and How to Fix Them)

The fan is running, air is coming out — but the room just won’t cool down. Before you assume the worst, here are the seven things that usually cause it, and how to tell a quick fix from a real repair.

Aircond running but not blowing cold air in a Malaysian home

An aircond that blows air but never quite cools is one of the most common complaints we hear, especially in the middle of a hot Klang Valley afternoon. The good news is that most cases come down to a handful of usual suspects. Some you can sort yourself in a few minutes; others need a technician with the right tools. Here’s how to work out which is which.

1. Dirty Air Filters

This is the number one culprit, and it’s the easiest to overlook. The filters behind the front cover trap dust, and in our climate they clog faster than most people expect. Once they’re choked, airflow drops and the unit struggles to push cool air into the room.

The symptom: weak airflow and a room that cools slowly, even on full fan speed. DIY or pro? Pure DIY. Pop open the cover, slide the filters out, rinse them under the tap, let them dry fully and refit. If cooling improves straight away, that was your problem.

2. Dirty or Iced-Up Coils

Behind the filters sits the evaporator coil. Over months of use it collects a film of dust and grime that a quick filter rinse can’t reach. When the coil is dirty enough, it can’t absorb heat properly — and in some cases it actually freezes into a block of ice, which blocks airflow entirely.

The symptom: very weak airflow, ice visible on the indoor unit, or water dripping as the ice melts. DIY or pro? A job for a technician. Coils need a proper aircond cleaning or chemical wash with coil-safe solution. Switch the unit off and let any ice melt while you wait for help.

3. Low Refrigerant Gas

Refrigerant is what actually carries the heat out of your room. Your aircond doesn’t “use up” gas in normal running, so if the level is low it usually means there’s a small leak somewhere in the pipework. Without enough gas, the unit simply can’t produce cold air no matter how long it runs.

The symptom: air that’s barely cooler than room temperature, ice forming on the copper pipes at the outdoor unit, or a hissing sound. DIY or pro? Always a technician. A proper gas top-up involves finding the leak first, then recharging — guessing the amount does more harm than good.

4. Blocked Outdoor (Condenser) Unit

The outdoor unit dumps the heat your aircond pulls from inside. If it’s smothered in leaves, packed against a wall, or caked in dust, it can’t release that heat — so the whole system loses cooling power. Outdoor units mounted in tight corners or behind plants are common offenders.

The symptom: the indoor unit runs constantly but cooling is poor, and the outdoor unit feels very hot. DIY or pro? Half and half. You can clear leaves and rubbish and make sure nothing is blocking the airflow. A proper fin and coil clean on the condenser is best left to a technician.

5. Wrong Settings or Mode

It sounds too simple, but it catches plenty of people. If the remote is set to “Fan” mode, the unit blows air without cooling at all. “Dry” mode cools weakly. A temperature set too high, or a timer you forgot about, will also leave you warm.

The symptom: air flows fine but isn’t cold, with no other faults. DIY or pro? DIY. Check the remote shows “Cool” mode (often a snowflake icon), set the temperature to 24°C or below, and make sure no timer or eco setting is throttling it back.

6. A Failing Capacitor or Fan Motor

The compressor and fans rely on a capacitor to start and keep running. When it weakens — common in older units — the compressor may not kick in, so the system circulates air without ever cooling it. A worn fan motor in the outdoor unit causes the same loss of cooling.

The symptom: a humming or clicking outdoor unit, a fan that won’t spin, or cooling that cuts in and out. DIY or pro? Strictly a technician. These are electrical components and should never be opened up at home. This is a job for an aircond repair visit.

7. The Unit Is Undersized or Losing Cool Air

Sometimes nothing is broken at all — the aircond simply can’t keep up. A 1.0HP unit fighting a large, sun-facing living room with the doors open will always lose. Direct afternoon sun, an open hall, or a room far bigger than the unit’s rating all work against it.

The symptom: the unit cools acceptably in a closed, shaded room but never in a big or sunny one. DIY or pro? Mostly DIY habits — close doors and windows, draw curtains against the sun, and give the room time. If it’s genuinely undersized, a technician can advise on the right capacity.

Which Ones Really Need a Pro?

Of the seven, three are comfortably DIY: cleaning filters, checking the remote settings, and clearing the area around the outdoor unit. The rest — dirty or iced coils, low gas, a blocked condenser deep-clean, and any capacitor or fan-motor fault — are best handled by a technician with gauges, the right cleaning solution and electrical know-how.

The honest rule of thumb: if a filter rinse and a settings check don’t restore cooling within an hour or two, stop guessing and book a proper inspection.
